Practical information for mobile students

All exchange students need to fill in the Application Form and Learning Agreement, or the Training Agreement before their departure. Any changes may occured during their stay have to be reccored in Change to Learning Agreement.

Visa procedure

  • Citizens of EU member states, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein or Switzerland - as of the 1st May 2004, EU citizens can travel to the Czech Republic with valid passports or IDs and do not need a visa.
  • Citizens of visa-free regime countries - the passport must have an expiry date at least 90 days beyond the expected departure from the Czech Republic. Please note that the citizens of Canada and USA do not require visa to enter the Czech Republic for a period of up to 90 days within a 180 days period, provided that they are not going to perform any gainful activity.
  • Citizens requiring visas - list of states whose citizens are required to have visa. General requirements:
  • Application form
  • Passport (valid for at least 90 days beyond the expiration date of the visa required),
  • 3 photos (passport size),
  • Health insurance certificate valid for the Czech Republic. It is possible to consult it with Czech authorities at the Czech embassy/consulate in their home country,
  • Proof of purpose of stay - admission letter issued by Mendel University
  • Proof of accommodation - accommodation letter issued by Mendel University
  • Evidence of funds to cover stay in the Czech Republic (by law around EUR 3 000 per year), i.e. a bank account statement in the student's name or a valid internationally recognised credit card,
  • Criminal Check (Police report),
  • Visa fee
  • Note: All submitted documents have to be translated into Czech language!

Students have to register at the Immigration Office within 3 business days upon their arrival and get the Temporary Residence Permit sticker into their passport. More information on visa issue can be found here.


Deadline for submition of application exchange students:

  • winter semester - 1st December
  • summer semester - 1st June.

Deadline for degree students differs according to the individual study programme from January until May.

Orientation Week

The university organizes an orientation week at the beginning of each semester. Participation is highly recommended as students will be given much useful information on study at Mendel University, will be shown round the university campus in Brno and can meet other exchange students. The orientation week includes several hours of Czech language instruction, two day trips, visit to the Botanical Garden and Arboretum etc. Students will also register their subjects during this week.

Czech language course

Before the beginning of the semester Mendel university in Brno offers to those international students, who take part in the orientation week, short course of Czech language at elementary level. There is also possibility to register the course of Czech language at the same level during the semester. This course is free of charge and students can obtain two credits if they pass it succesfully.


Mendel University in Brno issues ISIC, the international student card, to its full-time students, which provides many advantages also outside the university campus. Students of distance studies are not entitled to obtain ISIC; they can obtain only the Mendel University Student Card.

Buddy System

A buddy is a Czech student who picks international students up at the station in Brno, takes them to the dormitory and helps them during the first days of their stay at our university. The buddy system is organized by the International Student Club (ISC), which organizes a lot of student events during the year.

International Student Club (ISC)

ISC MENDELU is a MENDELU international student club. It assists foreign students studying in any international programme of Mendel University. The club, managed by students in close collaboration with the university Department of International Relations and Internationalization, Educational Department and Rectorate offers many activities to support the international community at Mendel University.
